    Speaking to the media here on Sunday, the petroleum minister acknowledged the difficulties being faced by the public, saying the government was aware of the hardships caused by the current situation. Ali Pervez Malik said the government had to increase taxes amid pressure from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

    He said the country had previously been brought to the brink of bankruptcy and maintained that the government would not take decisions against the national interest. The minister said the government was considering the regional situation and working on measures to provide relief to the public.

    He added that a fuel relief scheme had also been introduced for low-income and vulnerable groups. Commenting on the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) call for a protest on September 27, Ali Pervez Malik said political demands could be discussed, but violent protests would not be allowed.
