Mysterious island appears and disappears in Canada's Williston Reservoir

“A mysterious island covered with trees has reportedly appeared in and later vanished from a vast reservoir in British Columbia, leaving local residents and authorities puzzled. The unusual landmass was…”
The unusual landmass was spotted in Williston Reservoir, north of Mackenzie, earlier this month. Local residents brought the phenomenon to the authorities’ attention, but officials initially remained cautious about the reports, noting that digitally altered or AI-generated images can sometimes create misleading impressions.
The island’s existence was later confirmed through satellite imagery., a satellite image captured on July 20 showed the landmass clearly visible above the water. The temporary island was estimated to cover around 105,486 square feet.
However, satellite data showed no trace of the island by August 5, raising further questions about what happened to it. Bob Gammer, a spokesperson for BC Hydro, said the landmass may not have actually sunk beneath the water.

Instead, he suggested that it could have shifted back towards the shoreline or another relatively sheltered part of the reservoir. Authorities are now examining more recent imagery to determine the island’s location and establish how it appeared and subsequently disappeared.
The unusual phenomenon has sparked curiosity among residents while officials continue to investigate the movement of the floating landmass.
