Jelly Roll finally addresses his political views months after Grammy controversy

"For the last six months, I've watched people decide who I am, what I am, what I believe, what I support, and what I don't support," Jelly Roll said. His comments referred back to the February 1 Grammy Awards, where Jelly Roll won three awards but declined to comment on the political climate when questioned by reporters backstage.

At the time, he said he felt disconnected from current events after going without a phone for 18 months and did not believe people should necessarily care about his political opinion. Looking back, however, Jelly Roll said he now believes he handled the situation poorly.

"I had an opportunity to speak up for people who were scared, hurting, and felt like nobody was speaking for them. I had a microphone and I didn't use it the right way," he said.

The singer explained that he initially worried anything he said would immediately be interpreted as a political endorsement. "I fumbled my words," he admitted. "I wish I would've found the words to express my heart just a little bit sooner.

But I was afraid that anything I was going to say was going to be immediately taken as a political statement. "Jelly Roll said his attempt to remain outside partisan politics ultimately had the opposite effect.

"Ironically, by trying so hard not to make a political statement, I became one," he said. He also revealed that he only became eligible to vote in March 2026, meaning the upcoming November election will be the first election in which he can exercise that right.

"I spent my entire career trying not to belong to a political party. Partly because until March of this year, I wasn't even allowed to vote. But now that I have that right, it's one I plan to exercise this coming November," he.

Rather than aligning himself with a particular party, Jelly Roll described his political beliefs as straightforward. He said he wants people including recovering addicts, formerly incarcerated people trying to rebuild their lives and single mothers working multiple jobs to feel represented.

His message ultimately centred on compassion rather than partisan division. "Hurting hearts are more important than poll numbers," Jelly Roll said, arguing that the American dream should be accessible to everyone. The comments come after Jelly Roll spent much of his guest-hosting week addressing politics through humour, including jokes aimed at President Donald Trump.

His remarks about Trump had already prompted criticism from some viewers, particularly because Jelly Roll had previously been reluctant to discuss politics publicly. Jelly Roll's latest monologue offered a different approach. Instead of focusing on a particular political party or candidate, he used the platform to explain why he now believes remaining silent can itself become a political statement.

His appearance also marked a notable change from his Grammy-era position: after initially believing his political opinions were not important enough to share, Jelly Roll now says he intends to participate in the political process and use his voice more deliberately.
