The city's municipal authorities have launched a crackdown on fuel stations over inadequate fire-safety arrangements, sealing several petrol pumps across the city - a move that has triggered a sharp p…

The Enforcement and Implementation Department of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) sealed multiple fuel stations after finding their fire-safety measures unsatisfactory.

The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association (PPDA), however, has challenged the move, claiming that KMC had issued notices giving dealers seven days to rectify the identified deficiencies but some stations were allegedly sealed just a day after the notices were served.

In a joint video statement, PPDA Chairman Malik Khuda Bakhsh, Vice Chairmen Tariq Hassan and Anwar Kamal and other office-bearers termed the sealing of stations before completion of the stipulated period unlawful. They said dealers should be given adequate time and a fair opportunity to address shortcomings in firefighting and fire-safety arrangements before any punitive action is taken.

Malik Khuda Bakhsh said the association had sent a complaint to Karachi Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab, calling for an immediate inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the sealing of stations before the seven-day compliance period had elapsed. Vice Chairman Tariq Hassan said the closures had caused serious difficulties for fuel-station owners and demanded that the sealed stations be de-sealed immediately.
