PML-N secured six of eight reserved AJK Assembly seats

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) won the remaining two reserved seats for women. The PML-N secured three reserved seats for women and one each for Ulema and Mashaikh, overseas Kashmiris and technocrats.

Maryam Zaman, Maryam Idrees and Sehrish Qamar were elected on women’s reserved seats, while Abdul Rehman Arain won the seat reserved for overseas Kashmiris. Syed Iftikhar Ali Gilani was elected on the technocrat seat, while Maulana Mazhar Saeed won the reserved seat for Ulema and Mashaikh. PML-N candidate Riffat Abid and PPP candidate Zobia Khursheed received five votes each.

Following the tie, Zobia Khursheed of the PPP won the seat through a draw.

Earlier, Farzana Yaqoob had also secured a reserved seat for the PPP.PML-N leader Muhammad Nawaz Sharif and Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif had also interviewed the women candidates in Murree. In the recent AJK general elections, the PML-N emerged as the largest parliamentary party after securing 25 of the 45 directly elected seats.

With six additional reserved seats, the party now has 31 members in the Legislative Assembly, while the PPP stands second with 14 seats. Following the reserved seat results, the PML-N’s position in the house has become further strengthened.

With the support of Awami Dast-o-Bazu Assembly member Sajid Abbasi, the number of PML-N members in the assembly has risen to 32.
