Electricity tariff raised by Rs2.06 per unit, consumers face billions in additional burden

IISLAMABAD —Electricity consumers across Pakistan are set to face higher bills after the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) approved an increase in power charges under monthly and quarterly adjustments. NEPRA, electricity has been made Rs2.06 per unit more expensive under the monthly adjustment.
The increase will be reflected in consumers’ September electricity bills as part of the fuel price adjustment for July. The July fuel price adjustment alone is expected to transfer an additional burden of Rs33 billion to electricity consumers.
Separately, NEPRA has also decided to increase electricity charges by 52 paisas per unit under the quarterly tariff adjustment. The regulator has forwarded its decision regarding the quarterly adjustment for April to June 2026 to the federal government.

The quarterly adjustment will remain applicable from September to November 2026 and is expected to impose an additional Rs12.67 billion burden on consumers. Importantly, the quarterly adjustment will also apply to K-Electric consumers, extending its impact to electricity users in Karachi.
Taken together, the two adjustments represent an additional burden of approximately Rs45.67 billion on electricity consumers, although their billing mechanisms and applicable periods differ. The latest tariff adjustments come as households and businesses continue to face pressure from elevated energy and other living costs.
