Ukrainian drone units intensify long-range strikes on Russian logistics hubs

The attack on the Wildberries depot, situated approximately 45 kilometers from the Russian capital, represents a significant escalation in Ukraine’s use of long-range unmanned aerial systems to disrupt military, industrial, and logistical infrastructure far from the active front lines.

The operation was confirmed by Yevhen Karas, commander of the Ukrainian 413th Raid Unmanned Systems Regiment, who noted that his unit participated in the strike as part of one of the largest aerial offensives launched by Kyiv to date.

For the Ukrainian military, these strikes serve a dual purpose: degrading Russia’s economic capacity and bringing the reality of the war directly to the Russian public.

Commander Karas stated that the objective is to impose tangible costs on the Kremlin, suggesting that increasing the economic and logistical casualties within Russia is a necessary strategy to compel a shift toward peace negotiations.

While the conflict has persisted for nearly four and a half years since the full-scale invasion began in February 2022, the Kremlin has shown no public indication of seeking a settlement.

Nevertheless, Ukrainian officials maintain that by forcing Russia to stretch its air defense networks, disrupting critical airports, and creating fuel shortages, they can undermine domestic morale and pressure President Vladimir Putin to reconsider his stance. The 413th Raid Unmanned Systems Regiment, which operates these long-range missions, has evolved significantly since its inception.

Originally focused on battlefield reconnaissance, the unit now utilizes domestically produced FPV drones capable of traveling over a thousand miles. The composition of the regiment reflects the broader mobilization of Ukrainian society, with members ranging from former opera singers and cellists to computer programmers and rappers.

These individuals now follow a disciplined, repetitive cycle of preparing, checking, and launching drones from mobile sites, such as the sunflower fields of southern Ukraine, before quickly relocating to avoid detection. The psychological dimension of the campaign is explicitly acknowledged by the unit, whose official insignia features a stylized arrow and a depiction of the Kremlin in flames.

Commander Karas emphasized that the intent is to ensure that residents of Moscow experience the same insecurity that citizens of Kyiv have endured for years, frequently forced to seek shelter in underground metro stations to escape Russian missile and drone bombardments.

As the war enters this new phase of long-range attrition, the tactical focus remains on precision strikes against high-value targets. The soldiers involved in these operations operate with a high degree of mobility, leaving minimal traces behind after each launch.

For the members of the 413th Regiment, the mission is deeply personal; Commander Karas, a former philosophy student, joined the military alongside his brother on the first day of the invasion. Following his brother’s death in the defense of the Kyiv region, Karas rose through the ranks of the Special Operations Forces to lead this specialized unit.

The unit’s current operations underscore a strategic shift in the conflict, where the ability to strike deep within enemy territory has become a primary instrument of pressure. As the smoke continues to rise from the warehouse near Moscow, the Ukrainian drone crews have already moved to new positions, preparing for the next wave of attacks.

The ongoing campaign highlights the increasing reliance on drone technology to bypass traditional front-line defenses, effectively turning the skies over Russia into a new, volatile theater of the war.

Whether these strikes will ultimately influence the Kremlin’s long-term strategic calculations remains to be seen, but for the soldiers in the field, the objective remains clear: to ensure that the consequences of the conflict are felt by those who have remained removed from the front lines.
