PSL could move to January as PCB, franchise owners discuss new schedule

However, franchise owners are seeking assurances that their share of the league's central broadcast revenue will remain protected if the PSL is moved to January-February. Under the existing financial arrangement, the eight franchises receive 95 percent of the broadcast revenue generated through the central revenue pool.

The PSL was held in February and March from its inaugural season in 2016 through 2024. The tournament was subsequently moved to April-May for the last two editions because of international scheduling conflicts created by the ICC Champions Trophy in 2025 and the T20 World Cup in 2026.

The shift to April-May resulted in the PSL overlapping with the Indian Premier League (IPL), but it also brought one notable advantage: greater availability of overseas players. The change helped the PSL avoid some of the player-availability problems it had encountered when competing with other T20 leagues around the world.

Overseas Players Could Become a ChallengeA return to the January-February window could make overseas player recruitment more difficult. The PSL would be played alongside major T20 competitions including South Africa's SA20 and Australia's Big Bash League (BBL), both of which attract a large number of international players during the same period.

The PCB and franchises could therefore face increased competition for foreign players, particularly those who have commitments to other leagues or national teams. Winter Weather Raises Concerns. Weather conditions are another factor that could complicate a January-February PSL.Three of the league's traditional venues — Lahore, Multan and Rawalpindi — are located in Punjab, where temperatures can drop significantly during winter.

Dense fog can also affect visibility and disrupt domestic travel, potentially creating problems for teams, officials and match arrangements. One proposal being considered is to start the tournament in Karachi, where winter conditions are generally more moderate, before moving the competition to Punjab and Peshawar as the season progresses.

Such an arrangement could allow the PCB to navigate the harshest part of winter in northern parts of the country while still giving the league access to its traditional venues later in the tournament. PCB Has International Window Available.

The PCB currently has a relatively clear international cricket window from mid-November through March. Pakistan are scheduled to host Sri Lanka and England before taking on New Zealand in a two-Test series in March. The New Zealand series will be Pakistan's final Test assignment of the current World Test Championship cycle.

That scheduling gap could provide the PCB with an opportunity to accommodate the PSL earlier in the year without significant clashes with Pakistan's international commitments. PSL Could Expand Beyond Main Season. The Governing Council has also discussed ways to expand the PSL's commercial footprint beyond its main tournament.

Among the ideas under consideration is a possible mid-year tournament, which could provide the league with an additional source of revenue while keeping the PSL brand active outside its main season. The council has also explored opportunities in esports, potentially opening another avenue for the PSL to engage younger audiences and create new commercial partnerships.

However, neither the January-February switch nor the proposed additional events has been finalized. Further discussions between the PCB, franchise owners and other stakeholders are expected before the schedule for PSL 12 is formally approved. The final decision will likely depend on a combination of commercial considerations, international player availability, weather conditions and Pakistan's wider cricket calendar.
