The medal, which celebrates runners completing the 42.2-kilometre course, features a Sydney skyline on one side with prominent landmarks including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

SYDNEY (Web Desk) - Organisers of the 2026 Sydney Marathon have attracted plenty of attention online after accidentally featuring the wrong stadium on the event's official finishers' medal. The medal, which celebrates runners completing the 42.2-kilometre course, features a Sydney skyline on one side with prominent landmarks including the Sydney Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge.

However, the stadium depicted alongside them is not Sydney's Allianz Stadium but the Allianz Arena in Munich, Germany. The mistake was quickly spotted by social media users, who noted that the medal shows the distinctive diamond-patterned exterior and curved design of Munich's Allianz Arena rather than the appearance of Allianz Stadium in Sydney.

Sydney Marathon organisers acknowledged the error, describing it as an “unfortunate” mistake. “A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium,” a marathon spokesperson said.

The organisers said they were taking the mistake in good humour, adding that it had given people plenty to discuss ahead of the event. The blunder quickly became a talking point on social media, with users joking about how the two stadiums may have been confused because both carry the Allianz name.

Munich's Allianz Arena also joined in on the joke, responding to the mix-up on Instagram. “Oh wow, we didn't have that on our bingo card!” the German stadium posted, suggesting that both venues could at least claim to share a connection with Allianz and distinctive architecture.

Australian media outlets also poked fun at the error, with one headline describing the medal as putting Sydney “on the map” — albeit the wrong one. The other side of the medal features a blue-and-gold design created by Indigenous artist Ambrose Killian.

Killian said he was not involved in designing the Sydney skyline depicted on the reverse. Despite the design mishap, organisers expect the 2026 Sydney Marathon to attract a record field of more than 40,000 runners.

Each participant who completes the race will receive the medal as a memento of the achievement. Organisers said the medal represents months of preparation, including early mornings, long training runs and determination from participants.

“With the event a week away, this is the medal our finishers will receive,” the spokesperson said, adding that receiving the medal at the Sydney Opera House would remain a memorable moment for runners. The organisers ultimately described the medal as “a beautiful medal, and now a little more unique.”
