Born on December 28, 1941, in Jhelum, Khalid Mahmood was part of several successful Pakistan hockey teams that achieved major victories at international and Asian competitions. He represented Pakistan at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics, where the national team won the silver medal.
Mahmood played as a right-out. He was also part of Pakistan’s squad at the 1966 Asian Games, where the team secured another silver medal. Two years later, Mahmood featured in the Pakistan team that won the gold medal at the 1968 Mexico Olympics.
He continued to represent the national side at the 1970 Bangkok Asian Games, where Pakistan again claimed the gold medal. During his international career, Mahmood was therefore part of Pakistan teams that won Olympic silver in Tokyo in 1964, Asian Games silver in 1966, Olympic gold in Mexico in 1968 and Asian Games gold in Bangkok in 1970.

Besides his playing career, Mahmood also served Pakistan hockey in administrative roles. He remained associated with the Pakistan Hockey Federation as its secretary and also worked as manager of the national team. The International Hockey Federation, Asian Hockey Federation and Pakistan’s hockey community expressed deep grief over his death.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also expressed sorrow over the passing of the former national captain and Olympic gold medallist, paying tribute to his services to Pakistan hockey.
