LLAHORE —Under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, electric bus services will be launched at the tehsil level across Punjab from January 2027, with 1,500 electric buses planned for 91 tehsils across the province.
Dedicated electric bus depots for each tehsil have also been approved, while the first batch of buses for the tehsil-level service is expected to reach Lahore in January 2027. The chief minister has also approved the provision of additional electric buses to various districts.
The Punjab government has set a target of operating 3,000 electric buses across the province by June 2027, while the first phase of the electric bus service is targeted for completion by September.

Under the plan, 169 electric buses will operate across nine tehsils of Multan, 87 across four tehsils of Sahiwal, 215 across 11 tehsils of Bahawalpur, 63 across 10 tehsils of Dera Ghazi Khan, 202 across 12 tehsils of Faisalabad and 198 across 14 tehsils of Sargodha.
Similarly, 125 electric buses will operate in seven tehsils of Gujranwala, 122 in eight tehsils of Gujrat and 219 in 16 tehsils of Rawalpindi. The provincial government said 612 electric buses are already fully operational in different districts of Punjab, benefiting millions of citizens on a daily basis.
Another 192 electric buses are expected to become operational in various districts, including Multan, within the next few days. Additional electric buses will also be provided to Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore, Muzaffargarh, Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur, Rahim Yar Khan and Attock, among other districts.
Electric bus services will also be expanded in Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot, Layyah, Okara, Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura, while further buses will be provided to Mandi Bahauddin, Vehari, Kasur, Lodhran, Nankana Sahib, Narowal, Gujranwala and Multan.
The government has also been working on the expansion of mass transit infrastructure, with progress on the Faisalabad and Gujranwala mass transit systems described as rapid. A project for the construction and rehabilitation of 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service is also under way.
The expansion is part of Punjab’s broader electric public transport programme. The provincial government had earlier announced plans to introduce 1,500 electric buses across 91 tehsils in the first phase, with the long-term objective of expanding the electric bus network across the province.
