IISLAMABAD The Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) has issued notices to the Attorney General for Pakistan and other parties in appeals seeking medical facilities for prisoners similar to those provided to PTI founder Imran Khan.

A three-member FCC bench headed by Chief Justice Aminuddin Khan and comprising Justice Aamir Farooq and Justice Ali Baqar Najafi heard the appeals filed by three Adiala Jail prisoners against an Islamabad High Court decision.

During the hearing, Justice Aamir Farooq questioned why the prisoners needed treatment at private hospitals and asked why they could not be treated at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) or Polyclinic. Justice Ali Baqar Najafi observed that the jail manual clearly set out the applicable rules and stressed that prisoners should not be treated unequally.

He questioned the purpose of the jail manual if it was not to be followed, saying there could not be a separate procedure for every individual. The court issued a notice to the Attorney General for assistance and notices to other parties in the three prisoners’ appeals.

The FCC adjourned the hearing until Tuesday.
