"A total disconnection of the electrical system has occurred," the energy ministry said in a post on X, without specifying the cause of the latest failure. The blackout is the seventh major nationwide power outage reported in Cuba this year and the 12th since late 2024.
The outage underscores the deepening difficulties facing the island's electricity sector. Cuba, home to about 9.4 million people, has endured frequent power cuts for years as its ageing thermoelectric plants struggle to meet demand.
The situation has deteriorated sharply since January, when Washington imposed what Havana describes as a de facto energy blockade in an effort to pressure the Cuban government. Severe fuel shortages have made it increasingly difficult to keep power plants and backup generators operating.

Cuba relies heavily on imported fuel, including diesel, to run generators used when the national grid is unable to meet demand. Even when the grid remains operational, rolling blackouts frequently affect large parts of the country, leaving millions without electricity for prolonged periods.
In recent weeks, outages in Havana have lasted more than 30 hours, while blackouts in some outlying provinces have extended beyond 60 hours. The power crisis also disrupted essential services, affecting water supplies and phone networks and adding to the difficulties faced by households and businesses.
