    The development came as a delegation of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) met Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman at his residence today to discuss political matters, including the opposition’s protest movement., the delegation comprised PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja and former National Assembly speaker Asad Qaiser.

He said an agreement had been reached on the joint opposition and that Friday’s meeting was the first session in this regard.

    “We have decided that all parties will be taken into confidence on national issues,” he said.

    Gohar said an alliance meeting had also been held at the National Assembly in the office of the Opposition Leader in the Senate, Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, where it was decided that all opposition parties would be taken into confidence on national issues and an APC would be convened to discuss them.

    “We want to discuss the current law and order situation in the country, the state of the economy and inflation, and the situation of lawlessness. The issue of provinces has also been raised all of a sudden and is being discussed.

    Therefore, we want an all-parties conference to be convened in which all stakeholders participate,” he added. He said all these issues had been discussed in detail with Maulana Fazl and consultations with him were continuing.

    “When this consultation process is complete, we will inform you through the joint opposition platform,” he said. Gohar described the first meeting as a welcome development and said such consultations would continue in the future.

    JUI-F leader Maulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri welcomed the opposition delegation, saying the consultative meeting had also discussed the proposed APC.He said various issues, including the establishment of provinces, were discussed. He added that the situation in Balochistan, terrorism and other problems would also be taken up.

    “Given the problems facing the country, efforts will be made to play some role,” he said.

    The leaders also discussed the need for mutual consultation and a joint struggle among political parties for the supremacy of the Constitution, rule of law and protection of democratic principles, he said.

    Meanwhile, consultations have begun between the offices of the opposition leader and the prime minister to arrange a meeting following Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s letter to National Assembly Opposition Achakzai regarding the appointment of a new chief election commissioner (CEC), Achakzai wrote in a post on X.Following the prime minister’s letter, the process of consultations had been initiated between the offices of the opposition leader and the prime minister to arrange a meeting, he added.

    A day earlier, sources said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had sent a reply to Achakzai regarding the appointment of a new CEC.Achakzai had written to the prime minister concerning the appointment of a new chief election commissioner and had now received the premier’s response, sources said.

    Reports also indicated that Prime Minister Shehbaz had moved to open a channel for dialogue by inviting the opposition leader to consultations on the appointment of a new CEC.The timing of the move was notable, with the invitation coming days before the PTI-led long march towards Islamabad scheduled for Sept 27.

    It is pertinent to note that in a letter to the prime minister in August, Achakzai had urged the government to appoint a new chief election commissioner, along with two members representing Sindh and Balochistan. ECP preparations.

    Meanwhile, in a surprising development, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has already begun preparations for the next general elections, although they are scheduled to be held in 2029, by launching an exercise to update its nationwide database of election officials and review the existing list of polling stations.

    In an unusual move, the ECP has started compiling and updating the database of election staff nearly two years ahead of the elections. The commission has issued a letter to the provincial election commissioners, directing them to initiate the process of updating the database of election officials across the country.

    Following the ECP’s directions, provincial authorities have instructed district election commissioners to update the database of election staff. The commission has directed that records of all officers and officials working in government departments be compiled for the purpose.
