    Quick Read

The U.S. dollar remained under pressure on Wednesday, drifting near multi-month lows against a basket of major currencies as Treasury yields eased from recent peaks. Investors are currently exercising…

Investors are currently exercising caution, shifting their focus toward the upcoming release of the Federal Reserve’s latest policy meeting minutes. These documents are expected to provide critical insights into the central bank's future interest rate trajectory, as market participants look for confirmation on whether policymakers intend to maintain their current stance or pivot in response to shifting economic indicators.

The dollar index, which tracks the greenback against six major global peers, edged down to 99.65, reflecting a broader cooling of sentiment toward the currency. The recent decline in Treasury yields has been a primary driver of this trend, with the benchmark 10-year Treasury note yield falling to 4.702% and the 30-year bond yield slipping to 5.282%.

This pause in the bond selloff has occurred during a week characterized by a relative scarcity of major economic data, leaving traders to analyze the implications of recent reports that suggest a softening U.S. economy. Specifically, unexpected job losses recorded in July and milder-than-anticipated inflation readings have led many investors to scale back their expectations for aggressive interest rate hikes.

Harvinder Kalirai, chief global fixed income and currency strategist at Alpine Macro, noted that the upside for bond yields appears increasingly limited if the Federal Reserve chooses not to proceed with the rate hikes currently priced into the market.

According to Kalirai, the combination of a cooling labor market and surprising inflation data typically coincides with a narrowing of the dollar's yield advantage, which naturally feeds into a softer valuation for the currency. Elsewhere in global currency markets, the euro showed resilience, inching higher to $1.1577 and remaining within reach of the two-month high it touched earlier this week.

The British pound also maintained a steady performance, trading at $1.3533 as it held near a three-month high. Market attention in the United Kingdom is now fixed on upcoming inflation data, which analysts widely expect will demonstrate persistent price pressures, potentially influencing the Bank of England's own policy decisions.

Meanwhile, the Japanese yen remained largely unchanged at 159.56 per dollar. While the yen has surrendered a significant portion of its recent intervention gains, it continues to trade well away from the multi-decade lows of approximately 164 that were seen previously.

In the broader commodity and geopolitical landscape, oil prices climbed to near three-week highs, driven by ongoing tensions in the Middle East. This rise in energy costs has kept inflation risks at the forefront of investor concerns.

The situation remains fluid, particularly following comments from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on Tuesday that there were no active talks with Iran. He further insisted that the Strait of Hormuz remained open to shipping, directly contradicting assertions from Iranian officials that the vital waterway had been closed.

As the market awaits further clarity from the Federal Reserve, the New Zealand dollar and the Australian dollar remained relatively stable, trading at $0.5874 and $0.7083 respectively, reflecting a wait-and-see approach among global traders.
