The moment drew comparisons with a scene from. Aquamanin which Heard’s character, Mera, mistakes a red rose for food while walking through a Sicilian market with Arthur Curry, played by Jason Momoa. Some fans have therefore questioned whether Depp’s plant-eating moment was a reference to the scene, although there is no confirmation that it was intentional.

The comparison comes against the backdrop of Depp and Heard’s highly publicised legal battles. Heard accused Depp of abuse, which he denied. Their 2022 US defamation trial ended with both parties found liable for defamation, with Depp awarded $15 million in damages and Heard awarded $2 million.
