Block the Merger Coalition files emergency motion against Paramount-Warner Bros. deal

More than 1,000 Hollywood figures previously signed an open letter opposing the proposed merger, including Joaquin Phoenix, Ben Stiller and Kristen Stewart. The letter argued that further consolidation could reduce opportunities for creators and jobs across the production industry.

The coalition has continued to challenge the transaction even as the legal situation surrounding the merger has shifted. In July, a federal judge temporarily paused the deal after a group of 12 state attorneys general argued that the merger could violate federal antitrust law.

The states alleged that combining the two companies could reduce competition in the theatrical and basic cable markets. Paramount has disputed those arguments, maintaining that the merger would be pro-competitive and would create a stronger competitor to major streaming companies including Netflix and Amazon.

The company has also argued that the combined business would be able to invest more heavily in content production. The latest emergency request comes as the wider legal battle over the merger continues to develop.

The proposed acquisition has faced scrutiny from government officials, entertainment unions and industry figures since Paramount Skydance announced its plans to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. The deal has since progressed through several legal challenges.

Most recently, Paramount reached a settlement with 12 state attorneys general on September 22, removing a major obstacle to the acquisition. The settlement followed an antitrust lawsuit that had threatened to delay the transaction. The settlement did not end opposition to the deal.

The Writers Guild of America also previously filed a lawsuit seeking to block the merger, while the Block the Merger coalition has continued to oppose the transaction. The Paramount-Warner Bros. Discovery deal remains one of the largest proposed mergers in Hollywood history, with its outcome carrying implications for film production, television, streaming and the broader US entertainment industry.
