IISLAMABAD —The deadline for filing income tax returns for Tax Year 2026 expires today, September 30, with the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) considering significantly higher penalties for taxpayers who file their returns after the due date., the proposed penalty for individuals filing returns late may be increased from Rs1,000 to Rs25,000, while the fine for late filers belonging to an association of persons may be raised from Rs10,000 to Rs50,000. For companies, the proposed penalty may be increased from Rs20,000 to Rs100,000., 3,516,265 returns were filed last year, while the number has increased to 4,876,384 returns this year.
Tax collected through the returns filed this year has reached Rs19.217 billion. Salaried taxpayers filed more than 1.623 million returns and paid over Rs2.82 billion in taxes. More than 3.206 million returns were filed by non-salaried taxpayers, from whom Rs13.43 billion was collected in taxes.
Associations of persons contributed Rs1.41 billion, while companies paid Rs1.54 billion in taxes. Under the Small Shopkeepers Scheme, 644 returns have been filed, generating more than Rs48.2 million in tax revenue. The FBR has warned that taxpayers who fail to meet the deadline may face penalties under the law.
